How to Create a Spa-Like Bathroom at Home

June 10, 2025 •

Back to Ideas & Inspiration

There is nothing quite like sinking into a beautiful bathroom at the end of a long day. With a few considered design choices, you can bring the calm and indulgence of a spa into your own home — whatever the size of your space. Here is how our designers approach it.

Start with a sense of space

Spas feel calm because they feel open and uncluttered. Wet rooms and walk-in showers with frameless glass create that same airy sense of luxury, while large-format tiles and continuous flooring make even a compact bathroom feel larger and more serene. Wall-hung vanities and concealed cisterns keep the floor clear, adding to the feeling of space.

Make the bath a feature

Nothing says relaxation like a freestanding bath. Positioned thoughtfully — beneath a window, against a feature wall, or as the centrepiece of the room — it instantly becomes a focal point. Pair it with elegant floor-standing brassware and a comfortable backrest and you have your own retreat for unwinding.

Layer your lighting

Lighting is one of the most underrated tools in bathroom design. The trick is to layer it: recessed ceiling spots for practicality, warm accent lighting for atmosphere, backlit mirrors for getting ready, and dimmer switches so you can soften everything for a long soak. A couple of candles complete the transformation.

Choose materials that soothe

The most relaxing bathrooms are tactile. Natural stone, porcelain that mimics marble or timber, and soft matt finishes all feel calm and considered. Stick to a restrained palette of two or three complementary tones to keep the look cohesive and gallery-like rather than busy.

Do not forget the comfort

It is the finishing touches that turn a bathroom into a retreat: underfloor heating so the tiles are warm underfoot, a heated towel rail for a warm towel after every shower, plenty of clever storage to keep surfaces clear, and quietly luxurious details such as a niche for candles and oils.
