Fitted or Freestanding? Choosing the Right Bedroom Storage

November 14, 2025 •

Back to Ideas & Inspiration

A calm, clutter-free bedroom starts with great storage — but with so many options, it can be hard to know where to begin. Should you choose fitted wardrobes, freestanding furniture, or commit to a full walk-in dressing room? Here is our designers’ guide to getting it right.

Fitted wardrobes: tailored to the inch

Bespoke fitted wardrobes are designed around your room, making use of every inch — including the awkward alcoves, sloping ceilings and chimney breasts that off-the-shelf furniture simply cannot accommodate. Because they run floor to ceiling and wall to wall, they maximise storage while creating clean, built-in lines that make the whole room feel calmer and more considered.

The real magic, though, is on the inside. Every interior is configured around your wardrobe and your routine:

  • Double hanging for everyday clothes and full-length hanging for dresses and coats
  • Soft-close drawers, pull-out trays and dedicated shoe racks
  • Integrated lighting that comes on as you open the doors
  • Jewellery inserts, tie racks and clever laundry solutions

Freestanding furniture: flexible and characterful

Freestanding pieces offer flexibility — ideal if you like to rearrange your room, or may take the furniture with you when you move. A beautiful armoire or chest of drawers can also make a lovely statement. The trade-off is efficiency: freestanding furniture rarely uses space as completely as a fitted solution, and the gaps above and beside it tend to gather dust and clutter.

The walk-in dressing room

If you are fortunate enough to have the space — perhaps a box room or a generous landing — a walk-in wardrobe turns getting ready into a daily pleasure. Open shelving, glass-fronted cabinets, a central island with drawers and good lighting combine to create a boutique experience at home. Even a modest space can become a smart, hotel-style dressing room with clever design.

So which is right for you?

The answer comes down to three things: your space, your storage needs and how you like to live. Many of our Essex clients combine approaches — fitted wardrobes for the bulk of their storage, with a freestanding feature piece for character. The important thing is that the storage is designed around you, rather than the other way around.

Our designers will visit, measure up and listen to how you use your bedroom before designing storage that fits your home and your wardrobe perfectly. Visit our Basildon showroom to see fitted bedroom displays, or book a free, no-obligation design consultation to get started.
